Minor Recommendations

If you are an Arts and Sciences major, consider taking a complementary minor to give you a second concentration that you may find a helpful credential in searching for employment after you graduate. Minors chosen by English majors in the past include foreign language, women's studies, theater, business, communication studies, psychology, anthropology, philosophy, and political science. Many others are available. The newly created Professional Writing minor, which is housed here in the department, was created to support the major tracks in the department.

Minors in the English Department include (clicking on the link will take you to the individual minors' pages~ please note that some of these pages are currently being created):

The Minor in Creative Writing
The Minor in English
The Minor in Ethnic Studies in the United States
The Minor in Gender Studies
The Minor in Professional Writing

Students with 60 or more hours completed should consider an internship. Opportunities exist in the University Writing Center, in a variety of other campus and town locations, as well as in Harrisburg and neighboring communities, and this "real world" experience is a valuable credential in life after Bloomsburg. Contact the department chair for further information, or visit the Internships Office in the Student Services Center.

English Internships provide academic credit for experience both within the university and in the community. English majors have in past years found internship opportunities at the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, the Town Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, and at the University Development Office. Prerequisite: completion of 60 credit hours. Currently students are applying for an setting up both summer and fall 2012 internships.

The Department of English offers an internship with the University Writing Center. Internships for tutoring in the Writing Center are available to students in any major who are superior writers and communicators. Training is provided, so no previous tutoring experience is necessary. If you are interested, contact Dr. Ted Roggenbuck, Writing Center Director.
